Description

The first edition of Treasure Island was published in 1883 by Robert Louis Stevenson. This adventure novel narrates the story of a young boy named Jim Hawkins who, through inheritance, acquires a pirate map leading him to buried treasure. He then sets off on a fantastic sea voyage on board ship Hispaniola on an exciting adventure as a crew member under Captain Smollett, with the gentlemanly but mysterious Long John Silver.

Now, as he sails towards the far-off Treasure Island, Jim finds himself smack in the middle of a perilous mutiny when Silver and more of his crewmates are revealed as pirates eager to find the treasure for themselves. Now, Jim has to enter into deceit, adventure, and heroism as he makes alliances, treads through danger, and finds the riches that are well hidden.

The novel is full of themes of loyalty, adventure, greed, and moral ambiguity; Long John Silver, one of the most iconic characters in literature, embodies these complexities as he moves between being a friend and foe throughout the story. Treasure Island endures as a classic in adventure fiction, offering a reader excitement, memorable characters, and a richly detailed pirate world.
