Description
The Scorch Trials by James Dashner: As I was saying, the second book is part of The Maze Runner series. Thomas and his friends escaped from the maze, and the adventures continued as they encountered higher challenges in the desolate world that the organization, WICKED, had sent them to – it is called the Scorch, a barren wasteland after solar flares blasted the earth, now a dead wasteland. This group of surviving boys, known as Gladers, has to undergo the second phase of tests.
Here, they have to travel through the Scorch within a time limit when the climate is severe, resources are scarce, and “Cranks,” people affected by the Flare virus, turn violent. Thomas battles questions about trust, his past, and the actual intention of WICKED while continuing to survive in a world that appears to be set up to destroy them.
Themes:
Survival: The entire movie is shown with constant survival, both physical and mental survival.
Trust and Betrayal: The people have dilemmas about who to trust, like WICKED, and even each other.
Identity and Memory: Thomas continues to be shown with lost memories and identity, questioning his role in the trials.
Morality and Ethics: This book is adapted into the novel to express ethics of means used in order to get rid of Flare so that it would help people understand whether the end was justified through such a means.
Style:
Indeed, James Dashner writes fast-paced novels that have suspense and are action-packed for readers to get enthralled. This book has such an easily described dystopian setting with danger that is felt throughout and the racing urge going through the pages to keep it moving. This book interlinks with science fiction with psychological tension that relates to building up a mystery begun in The Maze Runner.
