Description

“Rule of Wolves” is another fantasy novel from author Leigh Bardugo, published in 2021. It is the second book in the “King of Scars” duology and, by extension, part of Bardugo’s greater Grishaverse series. The story unfolds following the events of King of Scars, where the journey of Nikolai Lantsov, the king of Ravka, evolves as he fights off many imminent dangers geared towards his war-torn country, a looming enemy in Fjerda, rebellion from within, and dark forces within.

Nikolai, accompanied by the powerful Grisha Zoya Nazyalensky, must overcome mounting political and magical obstacles. Zoya is learning how to control her emerging powers while dealing with all the grief and tragedy of everything that has occurred in her past. Nina Zenik, a Fjerda spy, is working against their own nation from within, attempting to break down their resistance as she mourns her own losses.

Themes of power, identity, leadership, and sacrifice bleed throughout the book as characters face impossible choices to save their world. Bardugo weaves in action, court intrigue, romance, and all the complications of leadership and personal morality. The novel builds up to an epic finish, pulling in loose ends from across the Grishaverse books.
