Description

Punk 57 is a New Adult Romance novel published in 2016 by Penelope Douglas. The story revolves around two high school students, Misha and Ryen, who have been pen pals for years but never met each other personally. They poured out their thoughts, dreams, and pains through letters and started to bridge over their differences in backgrounds with emotional empathy.

Ryen is the in-demand girl, and Misha is the anti-preppy rebel punk, who feels like a misfit. As they start growing close through letter exchange, they form an excellent bond that transcends reality. Things then take a turn when Misha transfers to Ryen’s school also and even develops a new identity not revealing that he is the boy behind the letters.

Their romance complicates because Ryen is drawn to Misha’s new identity but does not know the real identity that Misha possesses in her world. Their worlds clash, merging love, identity, and self-discovery into a single fable. The story draws the contrast between appearances and reality and how hard it is to be true to oneself.

Punk 57 is an emotion-laced, tension-filled, and passionate book and really great to read especially for new adult romance fans. The subtle interfusing of the strands of friendship, love, and the weight of the beliefs of society into the storyline by Douglas weaves all these together as a compelling and evocative exploration of finding one’s voice and courage to be real in relationships.
