Description

One of Us Is Lying is a book by Karen M. McManus that follows five students entering their high school’s detention but only four of whom leave it alive. The story is revolved around the mysterious death of Simon Kelleher, a student running a notorious gossip app exposing his classmates’ secrets. And when Simon suddenly dies during their detention, the remaining four students- Bronwyn, Nate, Cooper, and Addy- find themselves suspects in a murder investigation.

In this case, all of them have a reason to want Simon dead, because he was going to expose some secret over an app he was developing. Thus, during the investigation, the group has to share the media frenzy with the suspicion from the police as well as peer scrutiny and deal with their internal conflicts as well as the stress at their relationship levels.

In this multi-narrative frame, the novel unfolds with each character opening more about their backgrounds, personal struggles, and connections to Simon. This manner in which the mystery is built around his death brings it heavy with secrets to the point that the characters have to be involved in untangling the true culprit of the crime.

Main Themes:
Truth and Lies: All secrets and lies take a very serious turn; people will go to great extremes to protect their good names.
Stereotypes and Identity: Each of the main characters is brought to this high school as a designated type: the brain, the jock, the criminal, the princess, but along the course of the novel, the labels show their true identity.
It is such an exciting tale showing the dangers of social media, cyberbullying, how gossip can multiply and affect some lives at such a speed.
This book has received wide recognition for its pulse-pounding, suspenseful plot and complex character development. This book is one of the classic murder mysteries, but it involves modern teen issues like peer pressure, bullying, and identity, put in a handsome package. Coming of age and mystery elements come together beautifully; that’s why McManus was quite successful among young adult readers, as it highlights perception versus reality.
