Description
Mountain to Mountain is a memoir by Shannon Galpin, published in 2014. The book is indeed an account of the extraordinary journey of this humanitarian and activist that focuses on all her efforts on empowering women and girls of Afghanistan through education, sports, and storytelling.
After the personal tragedy of losing her younger brother and shifting from a public service career to a mountain biker and social entrepreneur, she founded the nonprofit Mountain2Mountain. She wanted to challenge the gender status quo and also shed light on the oppression Afghan women were going through in their every-day lives. Her work is with support for girls’ education, working in conflict zones, and advocating for women’s rights-enduring often perilous circumstances.
The book weaves together her own experiences with stories of the women she met in Afghanistan, highlighting resiliency and strength despite the hard circumstances of social and political conditions. It covers Galpin’s efforts to introduce cycling as a mode of empowerment in a country where girls riding bikes is anathema.
Mountain to Mountain is one of those incredibly inspiring stories of adventure, activism, and the power of one’s commitment to affect the world for the better, even at the cost of having to risk everything, including life itself.
