Description
Ali Hazelwood’s “Love on the Brain” is a romance novel. In this novel, Bee Königswasser is followed as she narrates her romance as a neuroengineer, filled with passion for work but miserable about her relationship with her colleague, Levi Ward. The story starts with Bee getting the NASA project and then surprisingly being paired with Levi who she despises so much for annoying her during graduate school.
The tense circumstances of the project work and their history that is marked with rivalry and undefined feelings create an endless web of contradictions between Bee, one who aspires to prove herself in a field that remains male, and Levi, with problems compounded by mounting attraction and growing desire for intimacy. As time passes, they strive to unravel themselves to learn to forgive and to make sense of each other in the pursuit of understanding the complexities of ambition, trust, and vulnerability.
The novel does incorporate elements of STEM, that is, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, thus bringing forth the challenges women face in these fields. With Hazelwood’s trademark of humor and witticisms, the book maintains a flow of humorous asides, but it is also filled with tension as the romantic feelings of its protagonists unfold.
“Love on the Brain” is a very tender story of love, ambition, and the complexities of working with someone with whom you vie both professionally and personally.
