Description

This contemporary romance novel by Colleen Hoover sends suspense and supernatural elements into the very fabric of the story. The novel has themes like love, trauma, and relation complexities discussed, as well as a hint of paranormal activity.

Plot Summary:
This is a love story about a musician named Leeds, who fell for the beauty and free-thinking Layla. Passionate in their romance, it turns dark since Layla gets involved in an incident that changes her life forever and leaves her scarred, physically and emotionally, for the rest of her life. Leeds is left to take care of Layla and help her regain her personality, which had changed under pressure.

Leeds also attempts to reconnect with Layla by taking her to a bed-and-breakfast in hopes of escaping their plight. Throughout the novel, the house gradually becomes filled with events that make Leeds question what is truly happening within their reality. Feeling hated and loved, or vice versa, within this love-loss relationship, Leeds finds herself between feeling for Layla and being attached to another woman at the bed-and-breakfast.

Key Themes
Love and Redemption: The novel treats love both as an energizing force as well as a threat given the traumatic transformations .
Identity and Transformation: Layla’s transformation and identity redefinition following her ordeal leads one to think about issues of identity during such monumental transformations.
Supernatural: Paranormal features will give it mystery and suspense, which enables the emotional believability in the storyline.
Tone and Style:
Hoover’s writing is emotional and thought-provoking, really putting the reader inside the deep emotion that Leeds experiences and the complexities of his relationship with Layla. The plot in no way is dull because there are very strong and realistic characters with a lot of twists.

Jamal Abedi’s Layla is a very good mix of romance and suspense, hence a very stimulating read in the romance genre. The novel, holding deep passions in love and hurdles of healing, leaves the reader with more questions than the answers about the human bond and the power of the human soul.
