Description

How to Kill Your Family by Bella Mackie is a dark comedy and crime novel. Narrated from the witty and sharp view of Grace Bernard, this story chronicles her meticulous plot to murder one by one her nasty relatives, putting into action a plan for revenge because her father had abandoned her and her mother.

Summary
Grace sits in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, but guilt for the murders she truly committed never crosses her mind. It is through flashbacks mixed with present-day narration that she explains her very well thought-out plans on eliminating each member of the family-one line at a time, deadpan sardonic tone and all. These themes are very well illustrated in this story with the help of privilege, revenge, and ambiguity of morality and come through mainly to Grace’s base motivations, for which her family resents obscene wealth and selfishness.

When Grace’s plot unfolds, the novel brings out the absurdity of such killings mixed in with dark humor and shocking twists to astonishing conclusions. Such killings are not just random violence; they are satirical comments on the elite’s superficiality and greed.
