Description

Hikayat-e-Saadi” or “Gulistan-e-Saadi,” a Persian literary classic of the great poet and philosopher of Shiraz, Sheikh Saadi, composed in 1258, consists of moral tales and philosophical reflections in both prose and verse, extolling justice, honesty, humility, appropriate rulership, and civic rule.

The book is divided into several chapters with different subtopics, such as the manners of kings, the behavior of dervishes, and advice for the young. Saadi makes use of short anecdotes, parables, and maxims to transfer wisdom gleaned from his vast travels and experiences within the Middle East, India, and Central Asia.

“Hikayat-e-Saadi” has inspired Persian literature and the literature of nearly every other culture, too, due to such universally fine messages on kindness, wisdom, and justice. Its simplicity has been a beauty and, therefore, the text has found its place in most cherished works in the literature of Islam and more frequently read for moral guidance.

It still is a widely read text for anyone interested in classical Persian philosophy and literature.
