Description
Jaun Elia was one of the most talented and renowned Pakistani poet who dominated the Urdu language because of his unique style of writing. He was the brother of the Journalist and analyst Rais Amrohvi and the world acclaimed Philosopher Syed Muhammad Taqi and he was the husband of the popular columnist Zahida Hina. Jaun was multi-literates and fluent in Arabic English Persian and Sanskrit along with Hebrew.
He was born on 14th December 1931 in Amroha of Uttar Pradesh in a well to do family and was the fourth of four brothers. Allama Shafiq Hasan Elia, the father of the talented is well known for poetry, astrology as well as art and literature. This literary influence imparted shaped Jaun a lot and he wrote his first Urdu couplet at the age of 8 only.
Jaun can be described as sensitive during his early teenage, he was always day dreaming, dreaming that he was in love with Sophia and at the same time he was full of anger against the British rulers of India. His concern with Muslim history and his–at least occasional–performances of early Islamic periods were evident, and he noted more than once that the language of his early poetry resembled that of stage dramas.
His relative Syed Mumtaz Saeed said that Jaun studied in a religious school known as Syed-ul-Madaris in Amroha. He pointed out that Jaun had a pas for languages for fluent in Arabic and Persian when in the madrasa and later refined in English and little in Hebrew.
