Description
Better Than the Movies traces the story of Liz Buxbaum, high school senior with an excessive fondness for romantic comedies, firmly believing in the power of romance to fix most of her life’s flaws. She is set to win the heart of her longtime crush, Michael, whom she imagines to be perfect for her. But it ends up going awry because she needs help from her childhood rival-the charming yet infuriating Wes Bennett.
As the process unfolds, Wes, with his own confusing emotions regarding Liz, agrees to assist her in winning Michael’s heart as Liz promises to assist him in his quest for a girl he is interested in. And so, Liz and Wes are put to work together, where they find themselves spending more time together than they initially would have liked; Liz happens to realize that her emotions are not exactly one-way after all.
The story is one of friendship, self-discovery, and messiness of love as Liz learns to navigate her emotions, face her perceptions of romance, and ultimately learn to embrace the unexpected turns life-and love-can take.
Main Themes:
Love and Friendship: The novel reminds its readers to treasure friendship and how friendship could blossom into something deeper-one that redefines preconceived notions about love.
