Description

Murder at the Vicarage is a detective novel by Agatha Christie, published in 1930 for the first time in print. It is the first full-length novel to feature Miss Marple, as well as one of Christie’s most famous detectives.

The murder of the universally detested Colonel Protheroe in the quiet English village of St. Mary Mead takes place in the vicar’s study. There are several people who could have motives to eliminate him: not least, his wife and her lover, a local artist. During the course of the ensuing inquiry by the local police force, Miss Marple, an elderly spinster with an intuitive feel for people, sits quietly and observes the unfolding of events.

Mystery is a roller coaster in the hands of intuition and systematic thinking of Miss Marple. She finds out who the real murderer is amidst unexpected twists and turns. The novel puts together the hallmark elements from Christie, that of a setting in a small village, complex characters, and a brillantly plotted mystery. Murder at the Vicarage established once and for all Miss Marple as a sharp-tongued and observant sleuth despite her appearance.
