A “house on fire” brief is the way to convey sense of urgency and importance in front of the team, usually because of the crisis situation that requires immediate action. All about gravity and urgent, focused problem-solving on a particular issue. Here is the structure of a house on fire brief:
Example: “Our website has been down for the last hour of a big sale, thus losing us a huge sum in revenue.”
Impact:
State what will happen if things remain this way in the short term.
Example: “We are losing $X every minute. Our customers’ trust is being shredded and we are witnessing social media backlash building.”
Priority:
State why this situation is more important than anything else.
Example: “This is one issue that needs to be dealt with immediately within the next hour to not lose anything further.”
Action to Be Taken Now:
State the action required to be taken here now, and identify whose responsibility it is clearly.
Example: “The IT team needs to begin to trace the source of the problem and resettle the website. The social media team needs to control public relations.”
Resources to Be Used/ Help Needed:
Mention what resources or help the team may require in order to perform during the crisis.
Example: “All needed facilities are provided. Contact emergency IT for assistance if required.”
Deadline:
Set a particular deadline by when this problem is going to be solved.
Example: “The website will come online again within the next 60 minutes.”
