Description
The Shadow Killer” is the second book in the “Flovent and Thorson” crime series from Icelandic author Arnaldur Indriðason. This is the story of 1941’s World War, set in Reykjavik, Iceland, where there was much tension both internationally and within the Icelandic country due to the Allied forces’ occupation.
The man is found dead in a small apartment. A Colt 45, the standard sidearm of American soldiers serving in Iceland, has shot him in the head, execution-style. Detective Flóvent, a mainland Icelandic investigator, and Thorson, a military policeman of Icelandic-Canadian extraction, are charged with solving the case. What follows is an investigation into the dark world of wartime espionage, local resistance movements, and the usually fraught relations between Icelanders and foreign troops.
As they dig deeper, they uncover not only a personal vendetta but also political intrigue involving both the Icelandic and foreign communities. The novel is an interesting mix of historical fiction and classic noir mystery, drawing the reader into this atmosphere of war and occupation in Iceland through the process of a well-crafted murder investigation.
