Lord of Shadows is the second novel in Cassandra Clare’s young adult fantasy, The Dark Artifices series, published in 2017. It takes place in the world of Shadowhunters, where supernatural beings like demons, warlocks, and faeries coexist with humans, and it chronicles Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn, along with their fellow Shadowhunters.
In Lord of Shadows, Emma continues to pursue the mystery of her parents’ death while trying not to give in to her forbidden love for Julian, who is her parabatai (a lifelong bonded warrior partner). The politics in the Shadowhunter world continue to escalate into a more deadly mess as tension between the Shadowhunters and the Downworlders -faeries, vampires, werewolves, and warlocks -rise.
In reality, the book is this wonderful novel packed with magic, romance, and political intrigue. Action, romance, and political intrigue await Emma and her friends as they face threats from the magical and mundane worlds. The Unseelie King wants to turn the balance of power upside down, and the characters will find a way through their personal as well as external conflicts in order to protect their world.
Themes include loyalty, love, family, and sacrifice, coupled with the complex emotional interrelations of the characters. Lord of Shadows ends on a dramatic, high-octane note, building towards the sequel, Queen of Air and Darkness.
