Description

The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins’s novel, is set in a dystopian future known as Panem, where the oppressive Capitol exercises power over 12 districts. Every year, to punish a previous rebellion, the Capitol compels each of the districts to send a male and a female to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised mortal fight.

The main character of the story is 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who belongs to District 12. When there was no volunteer for her sister’s part in the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers for her sister’s place. With fellow tribute Peeta Mellark, Katniss goes into the violent arena where survival is not so much about a show of physical power but about strategic alliances and emotional strength.

The themes of survival, totalitarianism, inequality and sacrifice mark this very important novel. Clearly, Katniss becomes the symbol of resistance against cruelty in the Capitol. This is a really gripping, fast-paced story of life-and-death stakes in a world of extreme social control.
