Description

In Powerless, by Tera Lynn Childs, there exists a world of the supernatural, replete with many powers. However, not everyone in this world was born with these powers. This book is a young adult fantasy novel that unfolds as a result of following Kenna’s life-that of a sixteen-year-old girl who, to most people’s dismay, is part of a superhuman family but was born a powerless human being, an outcast in her very own family and society.

Plot Summary:
Kenna is a half-gifted, meaning she is different from the gifted who have supernatural powers. Here, the gifted people hold all the power, while the non-gifted people are viewed and considered to be marginalized beings. It is hard for her to understand herself since her self-worth has been very much opined by her mother, who just so happens to be a very high-ranking figure within the gifted community.
This societal segregate brings about so much tension since those who do not possess powers will be judged and mistreated.

With Kenna’s sister, Lila, being attacked, Kenna’s life is turned upside down. As she desperately tries to guard her sister, she is enthralled into a conflict between the gifted and the powerless, and the unearthing of hidden strengths and capabilities will challenge her perception of herself and her family.

The plot gradually unfolds such complications of power-be it supernatural or personal-agency. Kenna encounters other characters, who are similarly outside the gifted realm, and an alliance is formed so that they can push their way through a hostile, unwelcoming world.

Important Themes:
Identity and Acceptance: The novel opens windows into self-acceptance and how one will find themselves in a world that believes in power rather than on an individual’s humanity.

Power Dynamics: The novel depicts how to consider the connotations of power-that is, supernatural powers as well as personal power and strength over difficult situations.

Family and Loyalty: Family plays a large role in the story, but this is a family that brings with them complications at best and certainly puts boundaries at worst.

Courage and Empowerment: Kenna is the epitome of empowerment, gaining personal strength to stand and fight for herself and those around her.

Writing Style:
Childs’s style is great to read-it’s as engaging as it is accessible, and more care has been taken in the writing of character inside than in what will appear outside-this way, she creates a vivid fantasy world. And action and romance elements.

Conclusion
“Powerless” is a stupendous story of finding real strength in one’s vulnerability and on the importance of embracing one’s individuality. It turns ideas of power upside-down and really makes readers think beyond technical abilities to what really defines a person. This novel would be perfect for young adult readers and anyone who loves fantasy with strong character arcs and meaningful themes.

I will definitely tell you more if there’s a character you’d like to see or a certain theme you are curious about!
