Description
Jennifer Niven has told one of the most poignant and powerful young adult novels related to the issues of mental health, love, and loss in “All the Bright Places”. The story revolves around the lives of two teenagers, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey, who met on the ledge of their school’s bell tower, contemplating committing suicide. Finch is a school freak; he suffers from undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Violet, being the popular girl, tried to overcome survivor’s guilt after her sister’s death in a car crash.
It is on the tinny reverb of their chance meeting at the bell tower that Violet finds an unexpected connection with Finch, and they soon team up for a school project where they have to explore the wondrous places of the state of Indiana. Finch helps Violet discover life’s beauty once more, while Violet starts seeing beyond Finch’s eccentric and troubled exterior.
But with Violet recovering from her injuries, Finch’s inner fight gets up more, and his mental health becomes terrible. It goes deep inside as the novel talks about the struggle of depression for Finch and on the other side, speaks of the stigma related to mental issues among the society. Their love is quite beautiful and tragic. It is full of so much happiness and, at the same time, so much darkness.
“All the Bright Places” is a tragic exploration of love, grief, and the impact of mental illness. It’s an exploration into a transformative capacity of love-how it can be enough to make you better, even if in reality, it could never quite “fix” everything. It’s a book that will bring together those little, special moments for life and honesty about the others who can’t always find their way out.
