Description

Tales from Shakespeare* is a collection of prose tales of William Shakespeare, written by Charles and Mary Lamb, which were first published in 1807. These works were compiled with the intention to make the plays of Shakespeare more accessible and available to children and readers who were not well-versed in the author’s way with words.

The Lamb brothers shortened the plots and streamlined the difficult Elizabethan language but kept much of Shakespeare’s original dialogue and essence. In this collection, both types of plays-tragedy and comedies-could be found, like Hamlet, Macbeth, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing.

The book is highly acclaimed for bringing the themes of Shakespeare’s ageless tales of love, jealousy, betrayal, ambition, and magic alive to a more expansive readership, especially to the younger generation. Every story throws emphasis on the important actions and figures and gives a glimpse of Shakespeare’s work while retaining the spirit and allure of his plays. Lambs’ Tales from Shakespeare has been a favorite gateway to readers for the Bard’s sphere of storytelling.
