Description

The Queen of Nothing” is the third and final book of Holly Black’s The Folk of the Air trilogy. It was a New York Times bestseller from 2019. The young adult fantasy novel is about Jude Duarte, a mortal girl living in the treacherous and magical world of Elfhame, as she navigates political intrigue, betrayal, and romance. The book continues the intense power struggle and explores Jude’s journey of reclaiming her power and finding her place in the faerie world.

Plot Summary:
At the end of The Wicked King, Jude is betrayed by her husband and love, Cardan, High King of Elfhame. He exiles her to the mortal world, removing from her title and power. In exile, Jude remains powerless and angry but soon gets the chance to return to Elfhame when twin sister Taryn requests her presence to help cover up a murder.

Jude returns to faerie, hidden and immediately thrust into the deadly games of faerie politics once again. Centering on Cardan, a king, and Jude’s complicated relationship, she discovers that her exile by him was only part of a scheme. This creates a formidable curse to hang over the province because Jude is able to devise a means of defending Elfhame and retaking her former position of power.

Major Themes
Jude Return to Elfhame

When sent away by Cardan, Jude returns to Elfhame with the disguise of her twin sister, Taryn. Her return sparks explosive confrontations and even more sordid political maneuvering between the two.

Jude and Cardan Relationship

It is this intricate and passionate relationship between Jude and Cardan that forms the core of the story. Both, to their core, love each other; however, their relation soon turns out to be full of deception, power play, and distrust. Their dynamics change when Jude discovers the truth behind Cardan’s actions.
The Faerie Curse:

The most prominent plot revolves around the curse that threatens the kingdom of Elfhame. Cardan is connected to the curse, and determining this curse unravels the climax of the novel. Throughout the novel, Jude makes many harsh decisions to save her realm and people she loves.
Power Struggle and Betrayal:

The novel is rich in court intrigue, betrayal, and shifting allegiances. Great parts of Jude’s journey deal with taking back her power and maneuvering through the political landscape of the faerie court.
Exploration of Themes: Power and Identity

Throughout the series, Jude fights with her desperation to play out power in a world where mortals are believed to be the weaker ones. She concedes who she is and realizes that it is more of the intelligent people and the resilient ones that thrive, rather than the strength of ambition.
Themes:
Power and Agency: This is a repeating theme where Jude constantly fights for power in a world where she is regarded as inferior only because she is mortal.
Betrayal and Loyalty: Another very robust theme is loyalty and betrayal, not only in the relationship between Jude and Cardan but also among many other characters in the faerie court.
By the end, all their relationship seems to be based on mistrust and manipulation. Yet they finally learn to trust each other genuinely and work together.
Finally, The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black ends with “The Queen of Nothing” in satisfying mode, blending romance, political intrigue, and magical conflict. It is at once a power and ambition story laced with love, and with it finally, Jude Duarte steps into her real life as a queen.
