Description
The novel, “Sea Prayer,” is a love letter to a beautifully illustrated story calling attention to the plight of those who are still in the refugee movement, especially Syrian refugees. Its narration revolves around a father writing to his son about their life in Syria before the war and wishes to safely find their better future.
He tells them of home and a happy childhood, all against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, raising in the reader’s mind an appreciation for their fate, though war-torn, to struggle to leave to escape conflict. The book has very strong themes associated with loss, hope, and the human spirit, showing the inherent need for safety and belonging.
Main Themes:
It tells a lot about the torturing process that refugees undergo while fleeing from violence to seek safety.
Love and family make up the gist of the novel. This is family love, and subsequently the instinctual need to protect that little son.
Hope and survival: In a situation that is completely hopeless, he holds on to hope for a better day.
Significance:
Through Sea Prayer, he makes a crucial observation on the refugee crisis, bringing the issue forward from statistics to personal stories. It is not just evocative prose that makes it a moving tribute to the resilience of those forced out of their homes but stunning illustrations by Dan Williams. Khaled Hosseini’s work generally brings to the table the issue of empathy and understanding on an international scale for global crises.
