Readers see how hard it was for Will when he lost his parents, how hard it was to take care of his little brother, and how he found inner conflict with being in love with Lake, who was at that time his student.
Interwoven with the flashes are everyday moments between Will and Lake as they go on building their life together. Along the way, they address remaining questions and unrequited feelings of the past, allowing them to become a better couple.
