The Book Thief, by Australian author Markus Zusak, is a historical fiction novel set in Nazi Germany during World War II. Narrated by a compassionate Death, this is a story of the growth of Liesel, who steals books and finds her refuge in reading, amidst the war. She shares a close attachment with Max, a Jewish man whom her family hides. Only Liesel and Max among the major characters survive the war. The Book Thief, which was published in 2005, became an international bestseller, with editions in 63 languages, selling 17 million copies worldwide.
