It Starts with Us is the much-awaited sequel to It Ends with Us. This novel continues from where the previous novel left off and is more concentrated on the relationship of Lily and Atlas now that they are headed to their future. Lily, a young mother who has been recently separated from her husband, is experiencing the process of co-parenting with Ryle and wondering about fresh feelings, which she has for her high-school boyfriend Atlas.
Atlas Carrington suffered a tragedy in his childhood as revealed in It Starts with Us and the novel looks at how this affected his life. The focus and themes of the story involve the themes of the opportunities for a Mender for a new beginning. They discuss topics as complicated as domestic violence but the overall mood of this book is different – it’s more positive and the characters are trying to find love, forgive and start over.
It Ends with Us and It Starts with Us focus on such issues as emotional abuse, recovery, and self-acceptance, and though both Novik’s novel and Hillenbrand’s book are dissimilar in the majority of aspects, they are still connected with each other as two parts of one story of Libby Baker.
